CHI 2010 took place in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2010. Though there are probably nicer cities in the US it is a good starting point for trips to Florida and New Orleans.

atlanta

After spending a couple of days at a friend's place in the suburbs of Atlanta, I attended CHI 2010 as a student volunteer and also presenter - my first CHI paper ;-). Here some nice spots not to miss when you are in Atlanta:

  • Georgia Tech Campus:
As a PhD student, of course, we visited the main campus of Georgia Tech and the fraternity buildings next to the campus. Don't miss an ice cream next to the Barnes and Nobles book store.
  • Stone Mountain:
A nice spot half an hour from downtown. You can either climb the mountain or talk a 30 minutes walk. At the foot of the mountain you find a small amusement park.

pensacola beach

The right spot for spending some relaxing days at the beach. Else there is not too much to see around, but do not miss to dine at Pet Leg Pete's!

new orleans

After 15 years I came back to New Orleans to find downtown mainly restored to what it looked like before Katrina. However, once you look behind the scenes, traces from the devastating hurricane can be spotted at any corner. Here some things to do while visiting New Orleans.

  • French Quarter:
Of course still the main attraction. Don't miss Bourbon Street at Night.
  • Mississippi River Cruise:
Board the steamer Natchez to explore the Mississippi Delta and New Orleans harbor - a bit pricey though...
  • Laura Plantation:
There are several plantations to be visited outside New Orleans. I chose this one due to the recommendation in my guide. Very informative tour and, even though restored, a nice place.
